Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
